Seasonal SEO Campaign. What will be your Post SEO Strategy? Here is a Valentines Day Campaign Story

So you created a Seasonal SEO Campaign? Let’s assume you created a specific campaign for the Holiday season or for Valentines Day. For example you came up with a campaign for a Florist. Since Flowers is one of the best seasonal products on Valentines Day.

Let’s go back to the campaign that you created prior to this Valentines Day. You stated a Champaign a few months ago trying to optimize the florist site for Valentine’s Day. You would have probably created specific pages to optimize for Valentines day Flowers. In that page, your content might be history, Facts, etc to create a Valentines Day theme. You would have also give anchor links, internal links to your site and yes also to have them buy products related to that season, probably a link saying Buy Valentines Day Flowers Now. The reason to do this might be to give users not only just Valentines Day flowers but also tips, facts and to share your knowledge since you are an expert in that field. Makes sense to me.

The search engines love fresh content. Again this is prior to this Valentines Day, visits your site, finds some great content for the visitors, finds new information and assumes that this site will provide visitors some valuable information related to the season. Your page view increases eventually ending up with more sales until Valentines Day. Awesome, So far so good.

Valentines Day is over, not every one will look online for this specific keyword. But you have those pages how would you handle? What will your Post SEO Strategy?

Let’s discuss some of the possibilities here:

From a User Point of View:

  1. If you decide to either delete or make it inactive or decided to have a 301 redirect? Those pages you created specifically for Valentine’s Day will not be visible, even if some one searched for it.
  2. In case they search for it. It will give a 404 error to those searches. Since this page is content related to that holiday, you might still want to keep those pages, so that it is visible only to the searches that specifically search for it. You can eliminate from the visual navigation but still keep the page live
  3. This also will help your client to rank for all year round and it will be easy to optimize for the next year same day, since you already have a presence for this keyword
This page will only be visible if a user knows this URL: For ex: www.xyz.com/pages/valentinesday.html those who search and find this page will find useful.

From a Search Engine point of View:

  1. Since this page is inactive, the search engines look at the page and don’t find those pages and will give a 404 error to the searchers. If you have the pages live ( which wont be visible to the visitors, unless they type in specific URL) the search engine will still index and keep it in the database, giving an overall results if someone searches for the terms.
  2. Since this is the trend for a few more day still search engine will rank some of the content in the SEPR’s, Which is a good thing.
  3. To conclude, having this page live is good from a search engine point of view.
  4. Another way to handle this is to do a 301 redirect or Robot.txt and send visitors to another page. Again if you decide not to rank for the keywords after the season. So the next time you try to optimize a site for this theme you will have to start from a scratch.

From the Client point of View:

  1. The Florist when searched for it, may see here and there these pages popping up in the search results for a while even after the season is over, this happens for all the sites, since search engines keep the index for a while.
  2. Some of the clients might think this is a problem, that they still see some of the pages even after the season, What would you do to get around this? My personal suggestion: Send an email with the above both user and search engine point of view benefit and educate and just inform them this is a good thing.

From an SEO point of View:

  1. Ok what would you as an SEO do? Well you might still keep the pages, but be careful with the anchor links which you created to point the visitors to your specific products, why? Because those products you sold only for these special occasions would have been inactive by now. So tweaking the Anchor links and other links will be useful.
  2. Tip: Use those anchor links for a different campaign but related to this theme. If you are creative you can link this theme to another theme.
  3. You would have probably tweaked some other page Title, Description, content and links optimizing to this campaign. Double check those pages.
  4. With the advanced search feature, you can see where all those keywords are appearing, you can search by Specific URL, Title, Body. Scan those places and tweak it .

Conclusion:

So overall having these pages are good for SEO and user point of view, but as a SEO, tweak, fine tune those content rather tan eliminating the page completely.

This is my own personal opinion. Do you have any experience or story to share about seasonal SEO? Feel free to comment

Have you Considered these while optimizing for your Local listings

Consider this while optimizing for your Local listings

We all know how powerful and ROI a successful SEO in Local Optimization Campaign can yield. And with this Iphone, Google Earth, Mobile version, GPS-like location finder with Google Maps can be good news to local business owners.

http://www.comscore.com/press/release.asp?press=1175, in 2006, Stats for accessing the internet from a Wireless Phone for Local Search was 24 %.

According to the study, some 61% of local online searchers went on to make a purchase from a local business--but the majority of them (40%) visited the brick-and-mortar stores or picked up the phone.

Did you know that some people search the local using the Airport Codes? Which makes sense for those in that industry and who are traveling? It is easy for them to remember the Airport Code then to search the City

Imagine you are traveling and you have your cell phone in a hand, what would be an easy way to find something in your final destination or anywhere for that matter. Let’s say, while you travel you crave for Italian food and on your way to your Hotel, you like to stop by in an Italian place. What would you do? Pick up your phone, do a search for Italian restaurant with User reviews closest from your present location. You pull out the phone with the GPS like locater and search near by and end up in a good Italian Restaurant near you.

How can an Italian restaurant get listed and pop up when you search for it?

Well with some basic listings, any local businesses can be listed by following the simple step by step process. In one of my SEO post, I have mentioned, How to get listed in Local. But there is a lot you can do to enhance and get listed. What can you do?

  1. In the Name field, think of using keywords and followed by the Business Name
  2. You can use that additional address field to be creative with your keywords
  3. Have you thought of inserting Address in the Contact us Page and other appropriate web pages?
  4. How about using your phone number as a Title with keywords in pages like Contact us form page etc.
  5. Use your ZIP Code both in Local listings and also in the website in any related page, why? Remember most of the time, we tend to search online using the zip code and it’s easy to type the zip code than typing the city, state in a cell phone. Using Zip code in the Title tag can be useful and not only in Mobile, even in the Search engine Page results your site will have advantage of other sites.
  6. Airport Codes. Do you know who will search using Airport codes? People who are in the Airline Industry tend to use Airport Code, wherever possible to find information. Now, How about you adding your nearest Airport codes in your web page Titles and in the Local listings. Imagine how a Travel industry can make the best use of it
  7. Keeping up to date information in your local listings in vital and local listings makes it easier to fix any incorrect information. Now- a- days you can instantly update your listings, Take Full advantage of it. For example, the new Fix the correct location feature in Google Map is not only helpful for you, it is also helpful for anyone who is searching
  8. Ask your Customers to give a honest review of your business, that will not only help in the rankings also it will help the users to trust you
  9. You can add up to ten images in the local listings. Think what images will be effective. If your location is difficult to find. Take a picture of the well know landmark or the complex and with some simple editing you can point your store location. If you are a Dentist, How about adding some before and after pictures. If you are a printer, have some samples or portfolio pictures. Find out what picture will give a location, clear description and use to those who search.
  10. If you are listing your restaurant in the local listing, How about a link with Menu. You can create custom attributes, create your own link and link to an online version of your MENU. So those who search your location, can also get a feeling of what kind of food they are going to order when they arrive. Both you and them save time.
  11. With Custom attributes, be creative, you can create anything you want, so why no list something unique than your competition.
  12. Categories – Make use of categories in the category section. You can submit your business to multiple categories. Make use of those categories, if you don’t find the related category, you can suggest a category.
  13. Operation hours are pretty handy for those who are searching, before they come to your store, they want to make sure that your store in open during their visit. So list the exact hours of operation. You can even mention that upon request you can open and also create 2 set of hours for a single day
  14. Coupons- Make use of the coupons, It free and easy to create coupons, It provides you additional value to the customers
  15. The easiest way to verify is thru the phone, but you can also verify thru mail which might take a couple weeks and for some businesses, you can verify via SMS.

So what experience you had both Online and Offline Business Listing, Share your thought here. Feel Free to leave a comment or ask any questions regarding listing your Business in Local Listings. Why Would Google Webmaster Guidelines Say So?

A few Days earlier I was talking to a customer about why your Business needs Internet Marketing Strategy? We had a very interesting conversation. He said....

"I don't want to be number 1 in Google, I already have clients and I am doing well for B2B, so I don't expect to be top rankings in search engines. But I wanted to know how a website can be user friendly"?

Here is the interesting part. "How the Website can be user friendly"?

Don't Google and other Search Engines expect the same too? Yes that is what all the search engines expect. The easier and useful for the users, the most importance it gives for ranking too.

Lets see some of the Guidelines by Google

Google Says:

Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link.

Why Google says that?

So that it is easier for the users to have a clear hierarchy and text link, all users should be able to read. Text links helps everyone to view. No matter what browser, what version the user use. The text makes everyone to access. Users don't want to have trouble finding other pages, text link makes it easier to access other pages. If I want to buy something online, I want to know more about the company and their history, so I like to go read more about them. So make all the pages reachable from at least one static text link.

Google Says:

Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site. If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages.

Why Google says that?

Users don't want be lost exploring the site, they like to easily navigate your website like a shopping complex. In case even if they were lost they can go to the maps and find their destination. And once they view they view the map, It should be easier to find their destination, so organize your site maps

Google Says:

Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content.

Why Google says that?

User wants to find useful information that is the reason they go online. To find information. Give visitors useful, valuable information. Give more links, tips and write articles about your expertise. Give some value to the users, they will come back to your site. Describe the content, not everyone using the internet is an expert. Help them to understand what the content is about.

Google Says:

Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and make sure that your site actually includes those words within it.

Why Google says that?

Keyword. The words users' type to find your site. Have that word in the copy so that users know that this site is about that particular keyword. Make it easier for search engine to find your website and index it.

Google Says:

Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images.

Why Google says that?

No all users can view images. It might not be compatible in all browsers. Not only the users can't view even the crawlers doesn't recognize image.

Google Says:

Make sure that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and accurate.

Why Google says that?

Give a Title and describe the alt tags. Alt tags are used to show what the image is about. Everyone needs a Title to recognize. Giving a title is giving a name. Help others know what this site is about by seeing the Title.

Google Says:

Check for broken links and correct HTML.

Why Google says that?

Nobody wants to view a bad URL or Error when they visit a site. When a user clicks on the links, they expect to go that page to view that page. Correct HTML helps and gives a standard to your website.

Google says:

If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.

Why Google says that?

If you have a dynamic page make is easier for users and search engines to navigate and find out. Don't confuse the users and the search engines

Google says:

Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100).

Why Google says that? D

on't fill the page with link, Limit your links, again don't confuse your users

Today Google announced a new feature on Google Maps that allows you to add maps to your blog or website just by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML. And once you embed the map, it has all the same functionality of the Google Maps you know and love; it's clickable, draggable, and zoomable.

Optimize your Power Point Presentation, Audio Pod cast for Universal Search

Optimize your Power Point Presentation, Audio Pod cast for Universal Search

Is your website Universal Search friendly?

My guess is soon Universal Search will have a feature to play your power point presentations as slide shows within the search results. Today is May 29, 2007. Let me see how soon Google will come up with this new feature of implementing Slide Shows within the universal Search Results.

Universal Search
Google’ Universal Search is getting into our systems already. We are used to it now with all these Search results from Images, news, Videos, Blog search, Book search, Google Base, Code Search, Catalogs, Recipes Search, Finance, Local, Maps, product search, Directory and a various medium and making them all into one, which is pretty logical and make sense to visitors who come to find answers.

As I mentioned earlier in my post about Universal Search Optimization, (Universal SEO)now SEO’s and Search Engine Marketers will have to work more and optimize more than just websites. Now they have to work on to optimize their website, on top of that, they have to optimize the Images with Alt Tags, Keywords and phrases, Videos with more tagging, ID3’s, More specific in describing, by giving a great Title, By Submitting the video to the right category with rich content, By linking back and forth to their blogs or websites.

Even thou optimizing your website for Universal Search is time consuming and takes a lot of communication and interaction within the team, it pays off for your work, which means now SEO’s need to interact with almost everyone to make the content Universal Search Friendly. Before SEO’s can just talk to the designers, programmers or webmaster, now SEO’s need to interact with all of the team, WOW, I love it. A little extra work will pay off with more Search Engine page Results, If you are a smart SEO, you can get the top five slots in the SEPR for your Site. Pretty Cool

Why should you optimize your Power Point Presentation and Pod casts?
Not too far away is the Google Power Point Presentation (Slide Shows). Even now with Google’s Gmail, you can view Power Point Presentation within the attachments. My guess is soon Universal Search will have a feature to play your power point presentations as slide shows within the search results. Today is May 29, 2007. Let me see how soon Google will come up with this new feature of implementing Slide Shows within the universal Search Results. If they come out with this feature, another opportunity for the SEO’s to optimize your Power Point Presentation. As a SEO we should think ahead and stay on top of Optimization.

How about your Pod casts? Optimize your Podcast, MP3 Files and Audio
Again this is my guess, with Videos playing within the search results. It won’t take much for Google to play Audio within the search results. Do you have a pod cast? Optimize your Pod cast, MP3 files with proper ID3’s, Title, and Description in proper category and tagging. I see another opportunity for SEO’s to gain a slot in the SERP. With all these tools out there you can easily create and optimize your Audio files.

What are your thoughts on it? Feel free to comment here on the blog.

Latest in SEO World.

What is latest in SEO world????
A lot. because of more and more Google Data Center coming up, there also might be a change in the way you see results than i see the Search Results. Recently I have been noticing the changes in SEO and the way Google Rank the Site for specific keyword.
Now Google looks also to sites that are linked to other sites, both irrelevant and Link Exchange for the purpose of SEO. They have the form to report sites that look like irrelevant links and sites that buy links from irrelevant sites with high page rank. So watch out if someone says that they will rank your website with link exchanges.Link exchange is not a bad thing, as long as it is relevant and useful to the visitors, link exchange is good, but if the links in your site points to sites that are not relevant, you might want to consider removing the Site.
Also too much of keywords within the site will let your site loose rankings. Over Optimization will sure get you out of Google Page Results.
So what you did yesterday will not be the same today, It keeps changing and i think, thats the way SEO should be, The more harder the more better for real SEO personals
